Rainforest Birds - Spangled Cotinga

Spangled Cotinga, Cotinga cayana. The Spangled Cotinga is a passerine bird found in South America. It is hunted for its colorful feathers, which are used for making fishing flies and decorations by indigenous tribes. There are seven other cotinga species within this genus. This bird ranges has a range within the Amazon Basin. It occurs in Brazil, Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Bolivia. Its natural habitat is tropical lowland forests. It can commonly be found dwelling up in the canopy, just under the treetops. These cotingas rarely occur above 2,000 feet in elevation. The females will build loose platform nests constructed of sticks. Nest placement is high in the trees.
